Concept

Plasma Active is innovative technology for a smarter user experience to run on future devices and platforms.

Activities:

The vision of Plasma Active is to create an innovative and fresh data-centric UI which is not concerned with applications but rather offers a user oriented interface with logically combined items through activities, which reflect the workflow and usage of the device by the user. Like in real life, where users are facing different situations with different requirements, the software uses activities as workspaces. In a work environment e.g. users have different preferences than they have on the train or at the opera. So the activities can contain different resources like files, contacts, applications or widgets.

Peek&Launch:

In this area the user gets the possibility to quickly change between open apps, images and whatever application runs full screen. The touch friendly thumbnails facilitate an easy launch of the desired program.

Connect:

The Share-Like-Connect concept molds your computer to your preferences. Connect a travel webpage to your Vacation Activity or a calculator widget to Home Office. Share photos with a friend or post them to your online photo account. Like several documents that relate to a project so that a search will find them quickly.

Recommendations:

Another big feature is the innovative technology recommendations: Plasma Active learns about usage patterns to find out what is important and supports with useful recommendations. An elaborated algorithm gives every content a special score based on current activity, usage patterns and likings. This brand-new feature works for images, urls and pdfs - more types coming soon.

Active Apps:

On Plasma Active a lot of touch friendly apps are already running and in service for the user. The community is already working on a lot more applications that will give more benefit for the users and the system.

Platforms

Plasma Active runs on proven Linux stack, including Linux Kernel, Qt/QML and KDE's Plasma Framework. It uses existing free Linux technology and brings it to a spectrum of devices. We have chosen Mer©, MeeGo© and Balsam Professional© as reference platforms to enable Plasma Active on modern emerging devices including tablets, smartphones, set top boxes or in-car infotainment. To adapt or extend the UI classical Plasma Widgets and applications can be used as well as newly created ones based on Qt Quick. This way the UI can also easily be branded or adapted to new platforms, workflows, designs and device needs.

Plasma Active is Open Source

The Plasma Active project and its development was initiated and is mainly supported and maintained by basysKom GmbH.
The Plasma Active project is open source under OSI compliant license and basysKom supports a viable community around it. More information and download details can be found at http://plasma-active.org.
